Pari vuotta sitten keksin, että normaalista virkatusta neliöstä voisikin tehdä vinon ja siten saada virkattua harlekiinikuvion. Siihen aikaan kun en ollut vielä keksinyt miten tehdä kirjovirkkauksella samainen kuvio. Novitan Hanko-langasta peiton itselleni virkkasin ja vuosi sitten taisi se vihdoin olla viimeistelyn kera valmis. Täällä blogissakin olen peittoa muutaman kerran jo näyttänyt, mutta näytetään nyt vielä kerran näin ohjeen kera.
Viime kesänä hankin kotiini pari Hay:n tuolia ja peitto vihdoin löysi myös kotinsa toisesta niistä. Joulun alla Porvoossa tuli vielä vastaan Vermeerin maalauksesta tehty belgialainen tyyny ja omasta mielestä se sopii peiton kaveriksi oikein mainiosti (elokuva tästä taulusta on myös omaan silmään visuaalisesti kaunis, kuin maalaus toisensa jälkeen).
Mutta mennään sitten itse yksinkertaiseen ohjeeseen. Kuvio on virkattu koukulla nro 6 ja tuotannosta poistuneesta Novitan Hanko-langasta. Minulla on haaveena tehdä peitosta villainen versio jostain paksusta villa- tai villasekoitelangasta. Lankavinkkejä otetaan vastaan. :-)

Virkkaa 5 kjs ja sulje ps:llä renkaaksi.

Aloita kierros 2 kjs:llä (= 1 pp). 1 p, 1 kp ketjusilmukkarenkaaseen, 2 kjs, 1 kp, 1p, 1pp ketjusilmukkarenkaaseen, 2 kjs, 1 pp, 1 p, 1 kp ketjusilmukkarenkaaseen, 2 kjs, 1 kp, 1 p, 1 pp ketjusilmukkarenkaaseen, 2 kjs. Sulje kierros kierroksen alun puolipylvään toiseen ketjusilmukkaan.

3 kjs (= 1 p), 2 p edellisen kierroksen silmukoihin, 2 kp ketjusilmukkakaareen, 2 kjs (nämä ketjusilmukat muodostavat kuvion kulmat), 2 kp samaan ketjusilmukkakaareen, 3 p, 2 p ketjusilmukkakaareen, 2 kjs, 2 p samaan ketjusilmukkakaareen, 3 p, 2 kp ketjusilmukkakaareen, 2 kjs, 2 kp samaan ketjusilmukkakaareen, 3 p, 2 p ketjusilmukkakaareen, 2 kjs. Sulje kierros piilosilmukalla ensimmäisen pylvään kolmanteen silmukkaan.

Here below you see a basic pattern for my harlequin granny square. I have used the pattern to make the blanket above. I used crochet hook number 6 and yarn is Finnish yarn Hanko from Novita, which is no longer in production. You can easily choose some thicker yarn, I would love to make a woolly version of this blanket and hope to find a perfect thick yarn for this purpose. I'll happily hear suggestions for a perfect yarn. :-)
Abbreviations and stitches (American abbreviations)
sl st slip stitch
ch chain
hdc half double crochet
dc double crochet
tr triple crochet
Round 1:
Chain 5 and join to make a ring with a sl st to the first chain.
Round 2:
Ch 2 (= 1 hdc). Crochet 1 dc, 1 tr into the ring, ch 2, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc into the ring, ch 2, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr into the ring, ch 2, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc into the ring, ch 2. Close the round with a sl st to the second chain (the first 1 hdc of the round).
Round 3:
Ch 3 (= 1 dc). Crochet 2 dc to the stitches of the previous round, 2 tr in the space (made by the ch 2 of the previous round, these chain stitches make the corners of the diamond), ch 2, 2 tr in the same space as the two tr before, 3 dc, 2 dc in the space, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space as the 2 dc before, 3 dc, 2 tr in the space, ch 2, 2 tr in the same space, 3 dc, 2 dc in the space, ch 2. Close the round with a sl st to the third chain stitch (the first dc of the round).
Round 4:
Ch 3 (= 1 dc), Crochet 4 dc to the stitches of the previous round, 2 tr in the space in the corner, ch 2, 2 tr in the same space, 7 dc, 2 dc in the space, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space, 7 dc, 2 tr in the space, ch 2, 2 tr in the same space, 7 dc, 2 dc in the space, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space, 2 dc. Close the round with a slip stitch as before and cut yarn.
Weave in the ends and you have a diamond granny square. :-)

Ensimmäisen peiton kuviot ompelin toisiinsa kiinni käsin, mutta nyt ehkä osaisin tehdä sen siistimmin, kun oppia tulee koko ajan lisää.

Here you see how I start combining the squares. I make long lines of them and then combine those together. And of course there are many ways to combine the squares either with tapestry needle or crochet, just choose your favorite way.
Tästä ohjeestahan toki vielä puuttuu ne palat, jotka tarvitaan reunoihin ja kulmiin tekemään niistä tasaiset. Nehän voi tehdä joko virkkaamalla peiton ympäri ja täydentämällä esim. kaksoispylväillä "kolot" tai sitten voi tehdä erilliset puolikkaat palat (kuten itse päädyin tekemään). This pattern still lacks the pieces you need to the corners and sides to make borders even. You can either crochet around and around, and at the same time ”fill in the holes” with trebles etc or you can make separate pieces (like I did). If you want to know the pattern for those half squares, just leave a comment to this post, and I’ll update the pattern. :-)
And as you see above, when writing down this pattern, I started to make a new blanket with leftover yarn. Time to continue that now when a weekend is starting.
